Title
Ringling Bros. Circus, Records, 1882-1918 19 c.f. (22 boxes, 56 volumes, 1 oversize file)
History
The Ringling Brothers Circus was created in Baraboo, Wisconsin by Al., Alf T., Charles, John, and Otto Ringling. Two other brothers Henry and August (Gus) also worked for the show and Henry later became a formal partner in the enterprise. The circus ran from 1884 to 1918 and was succeeded by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
The combined talents of the Ringling’s created a powerful management team and the brothers steadily expanded the size of their circus through the late 19th century. Their show was known as a “Sunday school circus” because the brothers did not allow grifters (shortchanging, pick pocketers, game-of-chance cheats) on their showgrounds. Prior to 1890 the show traveled overland across muddy and unpaved roads but in that year transitioned to railroads allowing for more efficient transportation and a larger tour route.
In 1905 the Ringling’s acquired half ownership of the Adam Forepaugh and Sells Bros. Circus (a major competitor) from James A. Bailey. Two years later they purchased the Barnum and Bailey Circus from the widow of James A. Bailey who had died in 1906. The acquisition also brought the full ownership of the Adam Forepaugh and Sells Bros. Circus. Though the brothers temporarily retired the Forepaugh title they ran both the Barnum and Bailey Circus simultaneously alongside of their own. The size and scope of the Ringling Circus by this point was massive and included over 1,000 employees. In 1910 and 1911 they revived the Adam Forepaugh and Sells Bros. Circus which they also based out of their Baraboo winter quarters. During the WWI era several of the brothers including Al. and Alf T. and Henry died. Otto had died earlier in 1911. The surviving brothers, Charles and John, combined the Ringling and Barnum circuses at the end of the 1918 season forming the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and relocated the home base for their show to the larger Barnum and Bailey winter faculties in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
