Historical/Biographical Note
Arthur Concello was born Arthur Vasconcellos on March 25, 1911 in Starbuck, Washington. His parents, of Portuguese extraction, later moved to Bloomington, Illinois, the hometown of the American Circus Corporation, which owned a number of shows, and the principal training ground for aspiring aerialists. At 10, he was taken under the wing of Clarence Curtis, who had taught many of the most successful trapeze artists, and at 16 he was a professional flier with the Hagenback-Wallace Circus. There he met Antoinette Comeau, a novice in a convent, whom he persuaded to join his act. They were married in 1928.
In the 1930s, Concello and his wife Antoinette were one of the main attractions of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, which Concello would later run. When Alfredo Codona, the renowned aerialist, was injured in 1933, the Concellos took his place and, with Art Concello regularly turning the triple somersault, the act soon reached a new peak of fame. The Flying Concellos became the first, and only, pair to perform the triple somersault, the summit of trapeze artistry. The money he earned from this, together with his profits from the other flying acts he supplied to circuses, bought him several houses, a drive lined with cars and a steady supply of large cigars. The Flying Concellos regularly played in Europe and in 1932 were engaged by Bertram Mills for London. Their contract stipulated that the triple somersault was to be performed regularly by Concello and Antoinette. However, when they failed to bring off the feat on the opening night, the engagement was declared void, and they returned to America. They were re-engaged for the 1934 season, when Art Concello achieved the triple regularly and the act was seen by the Prince of Wales. Later that year they also played the Cirque d'Hiver in Paris, as well as theatres in Berlin.
Concello was one of greatest trapeze artists of the last century and later became the most important and forceful circus manager of his time; his fast-talking, hard-acting personality provided the basis for the character played by Charlton Heston in Cecil B de Mille's film The Greatest Show on Earth. Concello himself was soon nicknamed "Little Caesar," in part because of the cut he took from all the petty criminal rackets which attended the affairs of the show. Life on the road was also marked by Concello's frequent rows with Antoinette, sparked by his many infidelities. On at least one occasion shots were fired in the Concello household. Eventually, in 1956, Concello and Antoinette got a divorce and Concello pursued a relationship with Margaret “Maggie” Smith.
Arthur Concello soon proved, however, that he was also an astute businessman, and by the late 1930s was running the careers of more than 50 aerialists, many of whom he hired to Ringling Bros at premium rates. In 1942, he was appointed the circus' general manager. The following year, the show's president, John Ringling North, lost control of the business, and for four years Concello ran his own operation, Russell Bros Circus. This soon merged with the wild animal acts owned by Clyde Beatty, and Concello rapidly began to grow rich. In 1947, North had the opportunity to buy back his circus, Ringling Bros, and turned to Concello for a loan of $100,000. Concello had the money for him by the next day, and within a week was reinstalled as general manager. A short, combative man who formed an intriguing contrast with the tall and imperious North, Concello also gained complete autonomy over the day-to-day running of the show. When he moved back to Ringling in 1947, he brought with him his own crew from Beatty's circus, known as the "sneeze mob". In the following years, Concello made Ringling the most efficient and profitable show in America, and particularly in the late 1940s and early 50s, Concello took it to new heights as a spectacle as the circus moved out of the big top and into play arenas and outdoor fairgrounds. In the process he amassed a fortune, based on his ownership of 10 percent of Ringling’s stock and on his patent for a new wagon which revolutionized the transport of vast circuses across America; Ringling travelled around the country in as many as 108 rail cars. Concello resigned from the Ringling Bros Circus on December 2nd, 1953 after several disputes surrounding finances with John Ringling North.
Following his resignation, Concello found his way back to the Clyde Beatty Circus by 1954. After only a few years of battling with Beatty over control of the finances of the Clyde Beatty Circus, Concello returned to the Ringling Bros Circus in 1956. He continued to manage the Ringling Bros finances and shows until his departure in 1964. After his departure he once again joined the Clyde Beatty Circus, now called the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros Circus, however, Beatty had died earlier in the year leaving Concello to take over the ownership role partnered with Frank McClosky and Jerry Collins. This also made him part owner of the King Bros Circus. After several years of managing this circus, Concello eventually was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and experienced a steady decline, ultimately leading to his death in 2001.
The Clyde Beatty Circus opened in 1945 with Beatty becoming the sole owner of the show in 1947. The show consisted of a big top tent with a large menagerie outside. It mostly played in western states, most typically opening in southern California. At least two movies were filmed at the show, Ring of Fear and 3 Ring Circus during the 1950s. In the late 50s, the Clyde Beatty Circus went into financial decline, ultimately pushing Beatty to sell the circus to Frank McClosky and Walter Kernan in 1957. The circus was renamed Clyde Beatty Cole Bros Circus. Eventually, after the death of several of the ownership partners, Jerry Collins donated the show to the Florida State University in 1981. The name changed yet again, to Cole Bros Circus, after Johnny Pugh purchased it from FSU and has been operating the circus since.
The Russell Bros Circus opened in 1928 and was founded by Claude and Pauline Webb. Despite having its beginnings in the Great Depression era, a period of which many circuses declined and disbanded, the Russell Bros Circus pulled through and became one of the largest traveling circuses in the US. It had shows mainly in the midwest, but eventually branched out traveling for shows in the East Coast, before settling it’s sights on California. The Russell Bros Circus became known for being the first circus to hold a show during a black out shortly after the outbreak of WWII. The Webbs held strong through hardship during the early years of WWII before selling the circus to Art Concello in 1943. Eventually, there was a brief partnership with Clyde Beatty animal training, before the Russell Bros Circus rebranded as a Railroad show and changed its name to the Russell Bros Pan-Pacific Circus.
Scope and Content
The collection was donated to the museum by Tom Parkinson and most likely were found in the Concello-Ward Training Barn at Bloomington, Illinois. The bulk of the records pertain to the operations of the Clyde Beatty Circus for 1946 and provide a nearly comprehensive overview of the circus operations for that year. These records include daily receipts with dates and locations (Boxes 1-9) and daily ticket reports (Boxes 10-11). There is also a box of ticket reports for the Russell Bros Circus from the year 1946 (Box 12). The rest of this collection houses business correspondence, railroad contracts, legal documents, insurance records, performer contracts, employee records, and other business-related items. Of note in this collection is correspondence between Concello and Pauline Webb from 1946 (Box 15 Folder 1). The collection also contains various personal records of Art Concello including photographs, postcards, and diaries. Of note in this collection are the many references to WWII era selective service through letters to and from conscripted soldiers (Box 14 Folder 69) and certificates of war necessity (Box 13 Folder 31).
