Scope and Content
A collection of business records, public relations materials, news clippings, and correspondence relative to the circus career of Carl Hagenbeck, noted animal trainer and circus proprietor. Of particular note is a pamphlet titled “The Circus War” from 1906 an opinion piece detailing Hagenbeck’s fight against “The Trust” a reference to a conglomeration of unnamed larger older shows that were waging a public relations war against newer smaller shows like the one Hagenbeck was running. Included in the collection is a letter from Hagenbeck complaining to a newspaper editor about the use of his name by the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus Also of interest is correspondence between Hagenbeck and the Ringling brothers regarding the buying and selling of animals for the Ringling’s circus.
This collection was assembled from a variety of sources over many years by library staff.
