Biography
Charles W. (Chang) Reynolds (1933-1986) was a teacher in the public schools of Pasadena, California for thirty-four years. During World War II he served four years in the U.S. Navy. A native of Livonia, New York he matriculated successively at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Pasadena Junior College, UCLA, and USC. An active artist all of his life, he specialized in drawing animals. Later, he derived a good income from western and animal scenes that he painted on oils.
Called “Chang” from his college days in Rochester, he signed all his writings in that style. “Chang” was the name of an elephant at the Central Park Zoo that he drew and enthused about to the point that his fellow students gave him that nickname. During his lifetime Reynolds assembled the largest file of elephant biographies in America. In addition, he wrote many articles and one book on circus history.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of two series, RESEARCH FILES (CWM Mss 11) and VISUAL MATEIRALS (CWM Mss 7) and is arranged alphabetically.
The RESEARCH FILES series contain notes and photocopies of materials relating to Reynolds’ research and correspondence with other circus historians including Robert Bernard (1959-61), Joseph Bradbury (1962-86), Jack McCracken (1966-67), Fred Pfening Jr. (1962-83), Richard Reynolds (1961-86), Stuart Thayer (1972-83) and William Woodbury (1969).
The papers provide extensive information on a variety of circus titles, personal names and animals covering the period 1771-1986. The notes and photocopies contain excerpts from trade journals such as Billboard and the New York Clipper in addition to newspaper articles. There is also an important series of notes relating to elephants. These notes contain elephant biographies as well as photographs and clippings dating from 1908 to 1986.
The principal focus of the VISUAL MATERIALS series is images of animals from both circuses and zoos from across the U.S. during the mid to late 20th century, with special emphasis on elephants. The series also includes photographs from approximately 12 circus shows between 1927 and 1966.
Donated to the Circus World Museum on 27 December 1991 by Lois J. Reynolds and Terry M. Mead.

Reynolds, Charles W. 1833-1986, Papers 1771-1986 (9.2 c.f., 19 boxes)
Biography
Mead.
